The AMP1 has a lot of noise on the overdrive channels. Is that normal?
All AMP1s have decent gain reserves on the three overdrive channels. It is the nature of the product that a preamp with a lot of gain alsos produce noise - the more gain, the more noise.
With the AMP1 Silver Edition and Mercury Edition, the VINTAGE and CLASSIC channels in particular have a relatively large number of mids and highs, which makes the noise even more audible. Incidentally, this is the case with all amps with a similar frequency structure and a higher gain reserves.
Solution: use the NOISE GATE!
That is why there is an integrated NOISE GATE in the AMP1 - an intelligent suppressor of unwanted background noise. Compared to external noise gates, the AMP1 can evaluate the signal at several points in the circuit at the same time in order to react as sensitively as possible.
The NOISE GATE adapts automatically and intelligently to the channels and their gain settings, so that as little signal as possible is lost.
The NOISE GATE switch gives you three options:
SOFT
SOFT - for all classic guitar sounds. The signal is attacked as little as possible. The background noise will disappear when you are not playing.
OFF
OFF - This deactivates the gate.
METAL
METAL - ultra-fast and hard response of the gate with extreme damping. Best suited for metal riffing at high gain.
