MIDI - Troubleshooting - Basics
First rule: Don't panic! MIDI is complex.
The good news: We have thousands of successful MIDI users.
Possible MIDI problems:
- No MIDI LEARN/no program changes
- No MIDI controller changes
- Working but unstable MIDI connection
Our statistic shows: It is very unlikely that AMP1 has a problem.
If so, then in most cases MIDI1 or the external controller has a problem.
MIDI LEARN/program changes do not work.
Connect your MIDI controller with a MIDI cable to MIDI1 and thus also to AMP1.
Don't connect any other devices for now.
-> Press Boost -> Reverb flashes
-> Send the MIDI program change command on channel 1
-> Flashing light stops (Midi learning was successful).
Test procedure:
Step 1: Test the hardware
-> AMP1 + MIDI 1, press Boost
-> Reverb should flash
If not: Use a different MIDI1 adapter.
If the other MIDI1 is not flashing, use a different AMP1.
AMP1 & Midi1 (Reverb flashes)
Step 2: Connect the MIDI cable to MIDI 1, connect the MIDI cable to the MIDI controller MIDI output
-> Press Boost -> Reverb flashes
-> Learn MIDI: Send a MIDI program change command from the controller on MIDI channel 1
(call a new preset - do not press the same preset twice, as the controller will not send anything if the same preset is called twice)
-> flashing light stops -> midi learning works.
-> Flashing light does not stop: No program changes are received from AMP1.
-> Check the midi send channel of the controller: midi must be sent on midi channel 1!!!
Set the midi send channel to 1 on your midi controller.
-> Check the program change commands assigned to your controller's presets.
-> Swap the midi cable that connects the midi output of your controller to the midi1 adapter.
If MIDI learning is not possible:
Test the hardware:
Try connecting another MIDI device to your controller and the MIDI cable.
-> Set your MIDI device to MIDI receive channel 1.
-> Works: Controller and midi cable work.
Try AMP1 again: It should work now.
If AMP1 still doesn't work, it's very likely that your controller is transmitting on a different MIDI channel. Set the MIDI channel to 1! And make sure all presets on your MIDI controller have different numbers.
————————-
Doesn't work: Your MIDI controller isn't sending anything. Try a different MIDI controller!
Note: You can use the Midi Ox program or your DAW to record MIDI commands. This allows you to monitor what your MIDI controller is actually sending.
Make sure you have a midi controller that actually sends midi program change messages on midi channel 1. Once this is ensured, try midi again with AMP1 and midi 1.
Midi controller changes do not work.
Make sure your controller is capable of sending CC (Continuous Control Commands).
Check if program changes work; then you are sure that the hardware (Midi cable, Midi1 and AMP1) is working.
Set your controller to MIDI channel 1.
Programming values (e.g., 50) on CC 007 (master volume on AMP1). Note: Use MIDI channel 1!!!
-> Volume changes: work.
No volume changes: Check midi channel 1, midi control 007 and the value!!!
Still no volume changes: Try controlling the master volume with another MIDI device.
Try other CCs: Gain: CC 20, Power Soak: CC 30.
